Mycena overholtzii Smith & Sol. Cap 2.5-5cm across, convex to nearly flat with an umbo; pale, dark or bluish gray; smooth, greasy, and striate. Gills adnate, subdistant, broad; whitish, staining gray when bruised. Stem 40-100 x 1. 5-5 mm; pale gray and smooth, becoming reddish brown toward the thicker base, which is covered in dense white hairs. Flesh pale grayish. Odor fungusy. Taste distinct, strange. Spores ellipsoid, amyloid, 7-10 x 5-6ì. Deposit white. Habitat clustered on conifer logs, sometimes under snow, and in deciduous woods. Fairly common. Found in mountainous areas of western North America. Season April-July. Edibility not known -avoid. |
